In March 2015 was our first IB performance during which the quality of our performance depended on us. I remember starting the journey in January with lots of ideas and expectations of what it was going to be like. I began with the idea of political theatre, taking inspiration from Boal and his 'Theatre of the Oppressed'. This would help lay out my theatre in the context aspect of the monologue. Boal, being director and writer of such performances provided 2 viewpoints I could look through as I thought about Theatre of the Oppressed. I was attempting to highlight the double pronged discrimination faced by a muslim girl because of her religion and gender. During the process of substantiating the piece I thought about Corporeal Mime in a way to show my status and the use of space like its holy (Peter Brooke). I started scribbling some random notes down like
Goal
Something to achieve
break it up into 5
One word per scene
Lose my ability to speak?
What happens after?
10 minutes
2 minutes per segment
However, this wasn't going anywhere.... so slowly I changed my monologue. My outlook changed as I realised that in an attempt to send such a heavy message my performance might not be up to par because of my yet inexperience with IB Theatre. I didn't want to disrespect the culture in an attempt to be a risk taker because sensitivity is also important in cases like this.
Artaud
Theatre of Cruelty
Make the audience in the centre and perform around them
Aristotle
Didn’t use his steps effectively, tried to make it a spectacle first and did;t consider the content
Patsy Rodenburg
Too second circle with a negative connotation. Sometimes one needs to be in the first circle for self progression
Laban
Dab with feet as stomped up the stage
Corporeal Mime
Tried to show constriction of spine as I got more trapped in the process
Grotowsky
Used no props but didn’t take it further. Used
Tried to use a lazzo
Bringing back the whats my name joke again?
Tried to prevent metathatre or show within a show. This was used by Shakespeare but only works in a bigger context.
Used by Brecht in The Elephant Calf and Shakespeare in Hamlet.
It is meant elevate the tension. It did;t work because there needed to be more.
